Invest in design (part 1)
PDF

We'll try each month to make a little review on current design to be bought for little investment. The title could be Invest in design without beeing rich (yet)

A big collection starts with less money, so these kinds of products, hidden by current famous auctions sales of majors products, could follow these guidellines and be later  objects with big added value.

The main paramaters of our choices are always the same for the object:

    - still in production

    - manufacturer still alive

    - diffusion and quantity

    - low price

Let's start our list with 6 objects.

  •  Starting for the cheapest to te most expensive, here is our list for september:

For low budget, the cheapest object is the sygma hook form Marc Newson. Sold 25€ or $30.

This object has been discontinued by Alessi. A few can be found online in blue, the last color available 2 years ago. The rarest is the orange version.

It can now easily be found at $50 in private sale,if NIB.

Designed by Marc Newson 1999

(Manufactured by Alessi, with simplistic Marc Newson Style, Sygma is a well thought out design - that in a way disguises its true function with sculptural finesse.
The large smooth circular rim helps not to disfigure clothes and cloth fabric in the way that a 'true hook' sometimes can)

We are far for the last auction for the orgone lounge chair, sold at $450.0004 month ago.

  •   The second object is the Ego vase from Karim Rashid.

This vase is particular in the productin of Karim Rashid, because it has really a deep reference to Art history. This vase was produced by MGlass, a society based in Portugal, and is now discontinued. It was sold in a two sizes, and in a various range of colors. (prices: $90-$130). It is possible to find a few online in little stores in Europe. One item was sold last week on Ebay at the price of $557. It was  in a rare mirrored version. We think that this object can easily reach the price of $500 in the next few years.

  • Leave chair from Patricia Urquiola.
Patrica Urquiola started recently to design products on her name . This chair is a good example oh her first production, and was produced first in 2002 by the italian manufacturer Bart Design (price: €380, $500). Bart Design seems to be closed since july 2006. We think that this chair was produced in a limited edition, so its value could grow up soon to €700, $1000).

  • AIO dishes and plates for Habitat, Bouroullec brothers.

This collection was designed in 1998 for the european group Habitat( now directed by Tom Dixon)

Each item was sold between $5 and $40. This collections wasn't a success and a lot of sales were returned to manufacturer.

Today you can find in private sales some items around $150 (like the teapot). The value of this collection will grow up constantly, due to the currently celebrity of the french designers.

We'll continue this list in the next news tomorrow.
